Present Perfect & Present Perfect Continuous

1. Present Perfect

Present Perfect is used when something happened in the past and it is connected to the present.

يعني حاجة حصلت في الماضي وليها علاقة بالحاضر، أو الوقت المحدد مش مهم، أو النتيجة مهمة دلوقتي.

Subject + have / has + V3

I / You / We / They
use have

He / She / It
use has

What is V3?

V3 means the past participle. It is the third form of the verb.

V3 يعني التصريف التالت للفعل. في الأفعال المنتظمة غالبًا بنضيف -ed، لكن الأفعال غير المنتظمة لازم نعرف الـV3 بتاعها.

finish → finished → finished play → played → played go → went → gone see → saw → seen write → wrote → written eat → ate → eaten

Examples

I have finished my homework.
أنا خلصت الواجب. النتيجة المهمة دلوقتي: الواجب خلص.

She has lost her phone.
هي ضيعت موبايلها. النتيجة دلوقتي: الموبايل مش معاها.

They have visited Luxor several times.
هم زاروا الأقصر كذا مرة. بنتكلم عن تجربة وعدد المرات، من غير وقت محدد.

My brother has just arrived.
أخويا وصل حالًا. الحدث حصل من وقت قريب جدًا.

Negative

Subject + have / has + not + V3

I have not finished my homework.
أنا مخلصتش الواجب.

She has not called me yet.
هي لسه ما اتصلتش بيا.

When do we use Present Perfect?

1. Experience

We use it to talk about an experience without saying exactly when it happened.

بنتكلم عن تجربة حصلت قبل كده من غير ما نحدد إمتى.

I have visited Paris.
أنا زرت باريس قبل كده.

Have you ever tried sushi?
هل جربت السوشي قبل كده؟

2. A past action with a present result

الحاجة حصلت في الماضي، لكن نتيجتها واضحة أو مهمة دلوقتي.

She has lost her keys.
النتيجة إنها مش معاها المفاتيح دلوقتي.

I have broken my glasses.
النتيجة إن النظارة مكسورة دلوقتي.

3. An unfinished time period

الفترة الزمنية لسه مخلصتش.

I have studied a lot this week.
الأسبوع لسه مستمر.

She has called me three times today.
اليوم لسه مستمر.

2. Present Perfect Continuous

Present Perfect Continuous is used when we focus on an activity that started in the past and continues to the present, or when we focus on how long it has been happening.

بنركز على النشاط نفسه أو المدة، خصوصًا لو النشاط بدأ في الماضي ولسه مستمر أو آثاره واضحة دلوقتي.

Subject + have / has + been + V-ing

I have been studying for three hours.
أنا بذاكر بقالي 3 ساعات.

She has been working since 8 a.m.
هي بتشتغل من الساعة 8.

They have been waiting for the bus for 40 minutes.
هم مستنيين الأتوبيس بقالهم 40 دقيقة.

Focus on the activity or duration

Why are you tired?
I have been studying all afternoon.
التركيز على النشاط اللي سبب التعب.

How long?

How long + have / has + subject + been + V-ing?

How long have you been studying English?
إنت بتدرس English بقالك قد إيه؟

3. For and Since

FOR
مدة زمنية

for two hours
for three days
for five years

SINCE
نقطة بداية

since Monday
since 2020
since 8 o'clock

I have lived here for five years.

I have lived here since 2021.

for = لمدة / قد إيه؟
since = منذ / من إمتى؟

4. Present Perfect vs Present Perfect Continuous

Present Perfect	Present Perfect Continuous
have / has + V3	have / has + been + V-ing
Focus on result, experience, or number.	Focus on activity or duration.
Often: What has been done? / How many?	Often: What have you been doing? / How long?

I have cleaned my room.
التركيز على النتيجة: الأوضة بقت نضيفة.

I have been cleaning my room for two hours.
التركيز على النشاط والمدة.

She has written five emails.
How many? Five. التركيز على العدد والنتيجة.

She has been writing emails all morning.
How long? All morning. التركيز على النشاط والمدة.

5. Important Words

JUST = حالًا / منذ قليل
I have just finished my homework.

ALREADY = بالفعل
She has already eaten.

YET = حتى الآن، وغالبًا مع السؤال والنفي
Have you finished yet?
I haven't finished yet.

EVER = هل سبق؟
Have you ever visited London?

NEVER = لم يحدث من قبل
I have never visited London.

6. Present Perfect or Past Simple?

لو عندك وقت محدد وانتهى، بنستخدم Past Simple.

I visited my grandmother yesterday.
الوقت محدد وانتهى.

I have visited my grandmother many times.
مفيش وقت محدد؛ بنتكلم عن تجربة.

Common finished-time clues:
yesterday · last week · last year · in 2020 · two days ago · when I was young

7. Stative Verbs

Some verbs are normally not used in the continuous form.

في أفعال بتعبّر عن حالة أو معرفة أو شعور، وغالبًا مش بنستخدمها في الـContinuous.

This form is not normally used.
